Jimmy John's Polish Night and Polish Fest - Milwaukee
On Thursday, June 15, 2017, members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble participated in the second Polish Heritage Night at Jimmy John's Field in Utica, Michigan. The event which was part of a baseball game between the Birmingham/Bloomfield Beavers and the Eastside Diamond Hoppers featured performances from many local Polish dance groups and Polka music from Duane Malinowski.
Members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble served as a color guard during the singing of the Polish and American National Anthems. Between the second and third innings, the Wawel Folk Ensemble performed a portion of its Saxernet Polka on the field.
On Friday, June 16, 2017, members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble headed west and north as they traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend Polish Fest, the largest Polish festival in the United States. Wawel has performed at Polish Fest at least 16 times since its first appearance in 1998. Wawel performed two numbers in the Polish Folk Dance Association of the Americas' gala concert of Polish dance at Polish Fest. Wawel presented a suite of dances from Bilgora and its Dances from old Warsaw. Wawel's choreographer, Donna Skurski, who is currently serving as PFDAA's president acted as Master of Ceremonies for the concert. The concert was not without its challenges as there were torrential rains which caused flooding in the performers' changing area during the concert.
Wawel's next performance will be in early July at the American Polish Century Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan's annual Polish Festival.
