1st Anniversary of The Smolensk Tragedy

On Sunday April 10, 2011 members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble attended a mass at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church in Hamtramck, Michigan commemorating the one year anniversary of the death of Poland's President, Lech Kaczynski, first lady Maria Kaczynska, and many other members of government, ministers, soldiers and officials. In addition to the church's parishoners, the mass was also attended by members of the ZHP, other Polish dance groups, and the Veterans of the Armia Krajowa. The mass featured reflections on the Smolensk tragedy and also included remarks by the Polish American Congress Michigan Division President, Mariusz Szajnert. Wawel's next appearance will be at the Easter Sunday Resurrection Mass at Sweetest Heart of Mary Church in Detroit, Michigan.

Wawel Update - Late Winter/Early Spring 2011

It's been a busy past few months for the Wawel Folk Ensemble. Here's a quick run down: February 12 - The Ensemble hosted the Love at First Sight Valentine's Dyskoteka. The event was well attended and featured the musical stylings of the W!LDZ. Funds from the event will go to help the group defray costs of its upcoming trip to Poland February 19 - Wawel performed at St. Theresa of Avila's annual Polish night. March 19 - Wawel performed at the fifth annual Polish Folk Dance Festival in Troy, Michigan. Wawel has participated in all prior festivals of this kind. The festival features numerous Polish folk groups from the metro Detroit area. Wawel presented its Krakowiak, and Rzeszow and Sieradz suites. April 3 - Wawel participated in the ninth annual Blessing of the Polish Folk Dance Ensembles at the 11:00 mass at St. Hyacinth Parish in Detroit, Michigan. This event, estalished by St. Hyacinth's late pastor, Fr. Francis Skalski, featured many Polish folk groups from the metro Detroit area. Wawel has participated in this event since its inception in 2003. April 3 - Wawel performed at Transfiguration/Our Lady Help of Christians annual Potato/Apple Festival in Detroit, Michigan. Wawel has participated at this festival for many years. It serves as the official opener for Wawel's summer festival season. During the performance, Wawel presented its Sieradz and Rzeszow suites along with the Karolina polka. Wawel's next appearance will be at Sweetest Heart of Mary in Detroit, Michigan for its Easter Sunday Resurrection Mass. Wawel's next performance will be at the Polish American Credit Union (Unia Kredytowa PAC)'s 35th Anniversary Ball on April 30, 2011. There's much more to come in 2011.
