You Say Potato....

On Saturday, 29 April 2006 and Sunday, 30 April 2006, members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble performed at Transfiguration Parish in Detroit, MI's annual Potato Festival. The Transfiguration performance is a longstanding tradition for the group, and marks the start of the group's summer performance season.

For the Saturday performance, the group performed its Nowy Sacz, Lubelski and Beskid Zywiecki suites. The ladies of Wawel also performed Kadzioleczka (the men of Wawel's favorite dance).

The Sunday performance featured the group's Krakowiak, Lowicz and Opoczno suites as well as the Karolina Polka. Sunday's performance also marked the debut festival performance for new members Corey, Lauren and Claudia. Congratulations.

Smigus Dyngus

This post is probably several days late, especially given Lany PoniedziaƂek was 17 April 2006; however, in the Yahoo Buzz section today, Dyngus Day was listed as one of the top searches. Here's a site giving a little back ground about Dyngus Day: http://acweb.colum.edu/users/agunkel/homepage/easter/eastdyngus.html

Also worth noting on this site is a reference to the Dynatones' concept album "The Resurrection." Members of Wawel met Ania, who collaborated with the Dynatones in Buffalo, New York in May 0f 2004.

Wesolego Alleluja!

On 16 April 2006, members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble participated in the Resurrection Mass' procession at Sweetest Heart of Mary in Detroit, MI.

Wawel and Sweetest Heart have a long history together. Wawel has participated in Sweetest Heart's Christmas and Easter celebrations for many years. Several of the recent Wawel weddings took place at Sweetest Heart. Wawel also performs yearly at Sweetest Heart's annual Pierogi Festival, usually held in the late summer/early fall.

Congratulations

Congratulations are in order for several members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble.

On Thursday, 6 April 2006, both Jim and Adella were re-elected to their positions as Vice President and Corresponding Secretary of the Warren Polka Boosters respectively. This will be the second term as officers of the Polka Boosters for both of them.

Congratulations also go out to Wawel's Artistic director, Donna Skurski and to Tommy. Both Donna and Tommy's children's groups held their annual recitals on Sunday 9 April 2006. Donna instructs the PWA Lowicz dancers, and Tommy instructs the PRCUA Halka dancers. This year was Tommy's fifteenth year as Halka's choreographer.
