American Polish Century Club 2016 Heritage Queen

We are very pleased to share that Wawel's own Cheryl Lewis has been selected as the 2016 American Polish Century Club Heritage Queen.  As queen, Cheryl will represent the APCC at various events over the course of 2016, including the APCC's annual Polish Festival.

Cheryl has been a member of the Wawel Folk Ensemble for 5 years.  She performed with Wawel when the group participated in the 2011 World Folk Festival in Rzeszow, Poland.  She has also traveled with the group many times to perform at Polish Fest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as well as many other festivals, masses, and events throughout southeastern-Michigan.  Congratulations Cheryl!

2016 Blessing of the Polish Folk Dance Ensembles

On Sunday, April 10, 2016, members of the Wawel Folk Ensemble participated in the 14th Annual Blessing of the Polis Folk Dance Ensembles at St. Hyacinth Church in Detroit, Michigan.  The brainchild, of the late Ks. Francis Skalski, St. Hyacinth's current pastor, Ks. Janusz Iwan and the dedicated parishioners of St. Hyacinth continue to carry on this yearly tradition.  Wawel has participated in this annual event since its inception.  In addition to celebrating Polish heritage, the mass also called to mind the death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and the Polish delegation on the sixth anniversary of the Smolensk catastrophe.

Detroit Pistons Polish Heritage Night

On Friday, April 8, 2016, the Wawel Folk Ensemble performed at the Detroit Pistons' Second Annual Polish Heritage Night held at the Palace of Auburn Hills.  Wawel, along with the PRCUA Gwiazda Dancers, performed the Krakowiak as part of the pre-game festivities for the event.  After the performance Wawel members remained to watch the Detroit Pistons take on Polish NBA player, Marcin Gortat and the Washington Wizards.  The Pistons defeated the Wizards 112 - 99 and saw Detroit clinch their first playoff appearance since 2009.
